Pick up their boot and bend it in half.

Hold it at the toe and the heel and fold it. Then do the same with an old pair of flat canvas shoes.

One of them barely moves. That's not a defect — it's the design. And it tells you something important, because a foot inside a shoe that doesn't bend isn't doing much bending either.

The Problem

Support isn't strength. A stiff, cushioned shoe works like a cast.

When a child's feet hurt, the advice is almost always to add something. More cushioning. Arch support. A raised heel. An insole, then an insole on top of the insole.

Every one of those does the same job: it takes work away from the foot. And in the short term that's a relief, which is exactly why it feels like the right answer.

But nothing in the human body has ever got stronger inside a cast. Put a healthy arm in plaster for six weeks and it comes out weaker than it went in. A shoe that holds, cushions and controls a foot is doing the same thing — just slowly, over years, during the exact window the foot is supposed to be developing.

A child's foot has 26 bones and more than a hundred muscles, tendons and ligaments. It was built to load up and give the energy back — a spring, not a passenger. Wrap it up from age five and by twelve it doesn't spring. It just absorbs.

The Knock-On

And then there's the heel. That's the part that changes how they run.

Weak feet are one problem. The raised heel is a different one, and it's the one that reaches all the way up the body.

Stand a body on a wedge and it has to compensate somewhere. Usually that's bent knees, a curved lower back and the head pushed out in front.
So the leg reaches out to catch up
From that position the natural thing is to swing the leg out in front rather than let the foot land underneath the hips.
Which means landing heel-first, out in front
A foot that lands ahead of the body's centre of mass is braking. Every step becomes a collision the body absorbs instead of a push it can use — and the load travels straight up through the heel.
And push off basically disappears
You can't drive off a foot that's out in front of you. No push off means no height, no extension, no spring — a shuffle instead of a stride. It's slower, it's more tiring, and it puts more load through the exact places that tend to hurt.

So the footwear didn't just weaken the foot. It changed the landing. And the landing is the thing you can actually train.

Before You Buy Anything Else

1. Bend the boot. If it won't fold, the foot inside isn't working much.

2. Sit it on the bench and look at it side-on. If the heel is higher than the toe, it's tipping them forward.

3. Film ten seconds of them running on your phone, from the side. Watch where the foot lands relative to their hips.

If it's landing well out in front, a fifth pair of boots won't change that. Nothing you buy will. The landing is a skill, and skills get coached.

To be clear: this isn't an argument for throwing out their boots tomorrow, and it isn't about barefoot everything. Football boots are football boots. It's an argument that footwear was never the variable you had control over — and the mechanics are.

Acceleration — The Gas Pedal

The forward lean is the gas pedal — and it decides where the foot lands. Lean from the ankles and the foot arrives underneath the body. Bend at the hips instead and it swings out in front, which is the braking landing the raised heel encourages.

Push Off — The Rev Counter

Push off is what a cushioned, braking stride steals. Big push off, big returns: the foot spends less time stuck on the ground, the body gets height, and height gives the foot time to land underneath rather than out in front. This is the mechanic that makes a foot behave like a spring again.

Arms — The Ignition

Your arms start your legs. Most kids don't know that. When the arm drive is locked or crossing the body, the legs follow — inefficiently, and without the drive needed to get off the ground properly.
